Without electricity, the modern home wouldn’t be all that modern. Electricity not only keeps us warm during the cold winter months but it also gives us access to the technology that keeps us modern and the security that keeps us safe.
We often don’t give electricity a second thought, instead we take it for granted because it is a natural part of our day to day lives. But although we are so used to having electricity, it doesn’t mean that we should get slack when it comes to safety.
Electricity can be immensely damaging and dangerous. At Impala Plumbing and Electrical, we are professionals in all things electricity. We have the experience and the know-how to make sure that our clients are well informed and that they have access to reliable, safe electricity.
To help you get a little more information about how you can stay safe, these 5 basic tips are all you need.

- Never overload the outlet
Although you have electrical extension cords and additional electrical outlet devices, it doesn’t change the fact that each outlet in your home is designed to handle a very specific amount of electricity. If you plug in too many things, the outlet can become overloaded and this can result in a fire or a small explosion. To avoid this, you can have an electrician add more outlets to your home.
- Minimise the number of extension cords you use
Extension cords are a helpful fix but they are not exactly a proper fix. When you have too many extension cords they can actually become a tripping hazard, especially as most people do not properly attach the cord to the wall. If you have too many extension cords, call on an electrician and find out how they can help you.
- Avoid water at all costs
It doesn’t need to be said that water and electricity don’t mix. But it is important to remind you to wipe down counters and close windows during rainy weather, to avoid a potential disaster. Not only should water be kept well away from electrical cords, but it should also be kept away from plugs and appliances.
- Replace your power cords
All appliances have power cords, and while the appliance will possibly stand the test of time the cord will often wear out long before you are done with the device. When you see the appliance’s power cord is wearing thin or if you notice that the inner cords are now exposed, it is the right time to replace it.
- Keep small children safe
Electrical outlets are often at the perfect height for curious toddlers to poke and prod. Luckily, there are many outlet covers out there that you can use to keep children safe from potentially being shocked. You should also make sure that extension cords and other types of extension devices are well out of the way.
