The lush summer heat is on the way and with it comes longer warmer days. So if you are keen on cutting back on the amount of money you are spending during these upcoming summer days, with these few tips up your sleeve, you can make a noticeable difference in the amount of money you are spending on electricity this season.

- Keep an eye on the air conditioner
We said you won’t boil this summer, but that doesn’t mean you can just have the air conditioner and never look at it. To ensure that the system works efficiently, and to ensure that it doesn’t end up eating your power, you should be investing in regular maintenance. Such upkeep will ensure that the air conditioning functions as it should, and it can also ensure that the air conditioning doesn’t take up more energy than is necessary.
- Opt for fans
If you are wanting to take more drastic action, you can choose to forgo the air conditioning altogether and instead just run your fan. Fans take much less energy than air conditioning, and they are often more than capable of providing a more comfortable cool air. Air conditioning can become a little too cold and end up being turned on and off throughout the day. This won’t be a problem with a fan, just remember to turn it off when you leave the house.
- Close your blinds or curtains at the right time
Often the blinds or curtains are left open throughout the day and only closed in the late afternoon or evening. But if you close them before the heat of the day becomes too intense, you can end up drastically lowering the indoor temperature before it becomes too overwhelming.
- Minimise the amount of cooking you do in the oven
Ovens are notorious sources of heat. In the winter, the warmth they generate is most welcome while in summer the oven can drive the heat up and render your AC or fan rather useless. During the hotter parts of the year, you can stick to the stove top or the microwave, or the slow cooker.
- Change the way you do the washing
Avoid using hot water and never use the dryer unless you have the odd rainy day, and you can save loads of energy during the summer months. Besides, with the hotter days, you can rely on the warmer weather to dry your clothing and washing with hot water is not necessarily going to ensure cleaner clothes, so switch to cold water for the wash.
